We recently wrote about how to shatter glass-ceilings, when you haven't seen it done before. Indeed, there are still many ceilings that need to be broken through. After Ursula Burns stepped down as CEO on January 6th, 2017, Black women are no longer represented in the C-Suite of Fortune 500 companies. In our current political climate, progress might look dismal, but we must remember we've seen the highest of glass ceilings shattered by President Obama.
As President Obama's second term comes to an end, we look back at some of the best leadership quotes from our First Family to keep you motivated long beyond their White House departure.
"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek." - President Obama
"Do not bring people in your life who weigh you down. And trust your instincts. Good relationships feel good. They feel right. They don't hurt. They're not painful. That's not just with somebody you want to marry, but it's with friends that you choose. It's with the people you surround yourselves with." - Michelle Obama
"If you're walking down the right path and you're willing to keep walking, eventually you'll make progress." - President Obama
"Changing the big picture takes time. . And the best things to do is focus on the things that we can make in our lives if we're doing all that. That becomes the collage of real change." - Michelle Obama
"I will never forget that the only reason I'm standing here today is because somebody, somewhere stood up for me when it was risky. Stood up when it was hard. Stood up when it wasn't popular. And because that somebody stood up, a few more stood up." - President Obama
"Success is only meaningful and enjoyable if it feels like your own." - Michelle Obama
"Ask yourself - how can I make the people around me do great things?" - President Obama
"We should always have three friends in our lives - one who we look up to and follow; one who is with us every step of our journey; and then, one who we reach back for and bring along after we've cleared the way." - Michelle Obama
"You can't let your failures define you. You have to let your failures teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently the next time." - President Obama
"Choose people who will lift you up." - Michelle Obama
