3 Things Every Successful Woman Should Own

1. A Brag Journal Often, we think we only have to keep receipts of negative occurrences at work to protect ourselves if something goes wrong, but in reality, we need to be maintaining receipts of our achievements as well!

Keep a brag sheet handy and update it regularly. You can use a simple excel spreadsheet to track your accomplishments. It should include information describing the project, who was involved, how long you worked on that project, and any feedback received.

2. A Mentor (Redefined) Finding a mentor can be overwhelming. When you look at the mentorship scope, it doesn't have to always be the same consistent person you're meeting with every week or every month. It can be a combination. Take advantage of the time you get with someone to soak in whatever knowledge that they can share with you at that moment, be a sponge! Ask them the questions and come prepared. What were they talking about last? What kind of information is publicly out there? What can I ask differently that they might not have heard, and what will make a difference to me and what I currently need? Sometimes I even come with a problem and say, "what would you do if you were in this situation?" That's an excellent way to leverage a mentorship without having to put that pressure on someone to meet with you constantly.

3. A Self Care Routine You cannot be your best self if you do not take care of yourself. It may sound cliche, but self-care is just as important as goal setting and establishing a work routine. Find time to unwind, relax and take the necessary steps to decompress so that you can show up your best self.

Wake Forest: Navigating as a Women in Male-Dominated Fields

As a Wake Forest Business School alum, it is always great when Angelina can return to talk to students about navigating the corporate world as a woman.

Key Takeaways:

  • Grad school doesn't prepare you for how much you have to advocate for yourself for what you want. We believe you do good, you should get rewarded, but that's not how it works in the corporate world. You have to be your biggest cheerleader to secure your advancement in the workplace.

  • It is detrimental to your career to share your work, promote your work and work with shareholders who promote on your behalf.

  • The best way leadership can support their employees is by amplifying their voices and not be intimated by their work.
